Cal Expo Picks – January 17, 2025

Nine races are the card at Cal Expo Friday night. The lone Pick 5 starts in the first race and the Pick 7 kicks off in the third. A Hi-5 wager will be available in races five & nine.

The main event of the night is the $16,000 Jack Williams Memorial Final which takes place in the seventh race. The 6-5 morning line favourite, Overthemoonforyou (Karpathian Kid) is currently on a three race win streak which was capped off by a 1:55.2 lifetime mark performance last week. The four-year-old mare scored her sixth career win and put her career earnings over $27,000. Quentin Schneider trains Overthemoonforyou and Aaron Lehman is scheduled to be in the bike.

The six-year-old mare, What A Cheer (Marced Card) closed late last week and rallied to finish second behind Overthemoonforyou. She is coming out of a similar post position and will likely have a similar route to travel if she wants to cause the upset. She has yet to win this year but has booked nine trips to the winner’s circle in her career. What Cheer will need to duplicate a time similar to her lifetime mark of 1:53.3 if she wants to win Friday night. Nick Roland trains and will be in the sulky behind What Cheer.
