Manitoba Standardbred Racing Industry Award Winners
It was time for celebration on Saturday night as the Manitoba Standardbred Racing Industry gave out their awards for the 2024 season.

One of the more notable awards given out was the Lifetime Breeders’ Achievement which is give to the individual that has shown consistent dedication to the breeders program in Manitoba. This year’s recipient was Allan Drader.

Drader along with his wife Carole began breeding standardbred racehorses in the early 80’s. Although they bred horses for many years before that, they didn’t have the Alcar prefix until after the passing of Hank Drader, Allans father in 1980. Allan and Carol then took over the pmu and the breeding business.

Alcar Farms had a unique system of naming their foals with the prefix “Alcars” a combination of both of their names (for Allan & Carole ) and the second part of the name being alphabetical order. The first horse on record is Alcars Allspice in 1980 and the last being Alcars Zorro in 2005. After Allan and Carole retired from the PMU in 2005, Allan continued to own a few mares and kept on with the breeding program. His horses’ names after that became names such as Als Friday Player and Als Happy Baylor.
The 2024 Horseperson of the year was Richard Rey. Rey has been a dedicated horseman in harness racing since 1976—a career spanning nearly 50 years. A self-taught trainer and driver, he has built a reputation for his deep understanding of horses, an instinct that has led to over 800 wins and close to $1.5 million in earnings. His consistency and success are reflected in his remarkable lifetime stats.

One of Rey’s greatest strengths is his versatility. He has had remarkable success with young horses, showing patience and skill in breaking colts and developing stakes winners. At the same time, he has consistently competed at the highest levels, producing open-class horses that perform year after year. His stable remains one of the most consistent in the industry, earning just under $100,000 last year alone.
